Guided answer

Provisional or complete specification?

When a provisional helps, and when it just delays the real work.

A provisional, written properly.

A provisional secures a date only for what it actually discloses. Anything added later takes the later date.

  • Write it as though it were the complete specification, minus the claims.
  • Include the mechanism, the parameters, the ranges and the alternatives.
  • Diarise twelve months for the complete specification - miss it and the application is treated as abandoned.
  • Consider a second provisional when the details settle, rather than waiting for month eleven.

This is educational guidance, not personalised legal advice. It cannot see your documents, your dates or the prior art, and those are usually what decide the answer. Use it to understand the question, then take advice on your own facts.

Not sure whether this applies to your invention?

The honest answer usually needs someone to look at your actual disclosure, your timeline and the prior art. That is a conversation, not an article.
