Guided answer

Design: can I register the look of my product?

Design registration protects how a product looks, not how it works. It must be new, and it is lost if you show or sell the design before filing.

Is the appearance dictated purely by how the product works?

Section 2(d): a design is the features of shape, configuration, pattern, ornament or composition of lines or colours that appeal to and are judged solely by the eye. It excludes any mode or principle of construction and anything that is in substance a mere mechanical device.

Not sure whether this applies to your invention?

The honest answer usually needs someone to look at your actual disclosure, your timeline and the prior art. That is a conversation, not an article.
